Powdered Silkworm Chow

If you do not have fresh mulberry leaves for your silkworms, you must have our powdered silkworm chow. Silkworms eat only two things — fresh mulberry leaves and our powdered silkworm chow — so a steady supply of chow is essential to raising them.

It takes about 6 grams of food per worm to reach a cocoon (the actual amount varies with leftovers), so a single ½-pound bag will raise roughly 38 silkworms to moths. Whether you are raising silkworms for silk, for breeding, or as high-quality feeder insects, we offer the best price online — and if you ever have a question, just email us, we are happy to help.

What you can raise with it

Pair your chow with silkworm eggs to hatch your own colony, or top up a cup of live medium or live large silkworms. New to silkworms? See our full guide to raising and breeding silkworms.

Cooking instructions

We recommend cooking in glass so chemicals from plastics do not leach into the food (silkworms are very sensitive).

  1. Put ½ pound of powdered silkworm chow into your container.
  2. Add 2¾ cups of water per ½ pound of chow.
  3. Stir well until no powder or dry chunks remain (a wet chunk can still be dry inside).
  4. Cover with cling wrap and microwave 2 minutes, then stir well so it does not burn.
  5. Microwave 1 more minute, stir again, and pour into your storage container.
  6. Press cling wrap directly against the surface of the hot chow so no moisture escapes.
